Three-Mix
Yesterday I downloaded Prospekt’s March the new EP from Coldplay, and I was pleasantly surprised that it filled in a couple of gaps that have been forming in my musical experience over the last few years.
First, not since the remix heavy craze of the mid-90′s R&B era have I been able to listen to the same song three times in a row and feel like I was listening to a new song each time. “Lost!“, the original has a rockin’ beat, is completely hummable and sticks with you. “Lost?” strips the beat in favor of piano flavored acoustics and mellows things out a bit. And, last but most certainly not least, “Lost+” relives the magic of the original and then punches you in the face with a cameo from Jay-Z.
Backup to the first track on the EP, “Life in Technicolor ii” and you have the song that extends the original and provides a previously instrumental-only song with lyrical confluence. It was Third Eye Blind’s album Blue that last had me feeling this sense of longing for words (“Slow Motion“) and longing for more (“Anything“). It took me at least five spins of the original Viva La Vida before I was able to prepare myself for the abrupt and lyric-less end to “Life in Technicolor”
If you didn’t already own Viva La Vida but were thinking about getting it, make sure you check out the Prospekt’s March Edition (combines Viva La Vida the album with Prospekt’s March the EP and it’s cheaper than the two purchased separately).
