The Wheels On The Really Fast Car Go Round And Round

21 Feb 2004 | 4 Why Do You Watch NASCAR?
A lot of people ask me, "What do you get out of watching a bunch cars go around and round in a circle for four hours?". Well, when you put it like that it does sound a little crazy. But I'm not just watching cars go around and round in a circle. I'm watching crews pull off sub-13 second pit stops. I'm watching cars bob and weave (it's a game of inches) around each other at 150-200 mph. I'm waiting for the broadcast to cut to Jr.'s radio transmission when he says things like, "I can't hear you, you're breakin up" when his crew radios in a warning from NASCAR. And for "kicks", I like reading a driver's 800 word explanation of a pass that everyone else summed up as "Junior just having the best car."

I watch because its no better or worse than watching 5 people try to put a round ball in a round hole. What's the point of that really? People run back and forth, a ball goes through a hole. Gee isn't that fun.

Any sport can really be put into such simplistic terms as, its just watching a bunch of people do X. Any form of entertainment really could be broken down into some simplistic form that makes it sound real dull. It's the subtlties in things that count, and different subtleties attract different people to different things, it take different strokes to move the world. That said I largely got intrested as a combination of peer pressure, and failure to find anything better to do with a sunday afternoon.
